College Admissions Essay Crunch Time

College Admissions Essay Crunch Time College Admissions Essay: The Time is Now                                                             Its that time of year when students have to hand in their college admissions essay. For students whose SAT or ACT scores are a little bit on the low side or for students whose GPA is lower than they would like, its extra important to have a fabulous essay. So what is it that makes an essay well above average? One â€" The essay should be incredibly unique. It must be unique in content but also in writing style. Many students have similar life experiences at age 16 and 17. However, students can put a unique and original spin on their particular struggles, volunteer experience, or personal outlook on life. Students should also show originality and writing style. If it appears that the essay has an overly rigid structure it will appear less interesting to the reader. Two â€" The essay should have absolutely no errors. It is especially important for an admissions essay to have appropriate structure, proper grammar, and absolutely no spelling or punctuation errors. Student writers should have multiple people proofread their essay or hire a professional proofreader who can catch any and all errors as well as provide appropriate suggestions for structural improvements our Irvine English tutors would be more than glad to read it. Three â€" The essay should be about you as a person. College admissions departments do not want to admit students who are all exactly the same. US colleges and universities like to have diversity on campus and so its important that the internal “you” can shine through your essay. If theres something unique about your personality or what you would like to do with your life or something that you have a particular passion for, its important to mention that in the essay (READ: College Application Crunch Time). What to Do Now So what do you do now that your college applications, including your admissions essay, are due less than a month from today? Here is a last minute timeline that you can follow to allow yourself the best chance at success as a student writer. One â€" Start writing right now. If, for some reason, you have not yet started writing the first draft of your essay now is the time to get started. Seriously, stop reading this blog, sit down at your computer and start typing. There is not much time left but there is still enough time for a dedicated student to finish a first and second draft and to arrange for a proofreader. Two â€" Polish up the content. If you have already written a rough draft for your essay now is the time to pull it out of your binder, backpack, or the drawer that you stuffed it in and take a second look. Read through it and see whats working and whats not. Grab two different color highlighters and highlight the things that are really great and the things that you would like to keep, and then highlight the things that need improvement (READ: 7 Best Essay Contests). Ask a parent, a trusted and dedicated friend, or a tutor to take a look at your essay. Ask them to give you absolutely honest feedback. What do they like about it and what dont they like about it? Then go ahead and write your second draft. Remember to do all of your content edits before you start your grammar edits, otherwise you may find that youre simply correcting things over and over again when it wasnt really necessary to do so. Three â€" Polish up the structure. If you feel that your structure is rigid or if you dont have any transition sentences, arrange to sit down with a tutor for an hour or two and get it polished up. If it is an option, hire a proofreader to go through and give you suggestions. It may take a couple of proofreads because you may need to send it back for a final edit after you fix the first set of corrections and suggestions. The college admissions essay is incredibly important and should not be overlooked and it is especially important for students who have lower SAT scores or a lower GPA. A fabulously written essay can often take a student’s application from the ‘maybe’ pile to the ‘yes’ pile in the college admissions department. For students who would like to attend a small liberal arts college, keep in mind that the essay is given a heavier weight on acceptance than at larger universities. There is still time, so start writing and get it out of the way so that you can enjoy your winter break. All blog entries, with the exception of guest bloggers, are written by TutorNerds. Irvine Tutoring Tips Make Studying a Social Activity

Irvine Tutoring Tips Make Studying a Social Activity Tips From a Private Irvine Tutor: 4 Benefits of Making Studying a Social Activity Many students find that its helpful to study in the peace of their room or a library without any distraction. On the other hand, some students find it hard to get started on assignments or test prep without a social element to their studying. There are a lot of benefits of making studying a social activity and students who work together may find that their overall GPA is higher and that they are more capable of tackling those especially challenging assignments. 1. Motivation There are some subjects that students find especially dry and just arent motivated to work on. However, in a social situation, they want to keep up with the crowd and be able to participate to the same extent that their friends are. Many study groups split up different tasks so each student only has to delve into one or two chapters, which they can later present to the group. Sometimes, an especially motivated member of the team will create a study guide for everybody that will help them focus on different things that the teacher pointed out during class. Students are more motivated to succeed in front of friends than they are on their own and often find they are more successful in classes they dont particularly like. 2. Make studying fun Students who study as part of an official group or even just with a friend on a more informal basis are more likely to have fun studying and associate learning as something positive. When students are having fun, they are more likely to want to repeat the activity, which will help their grades and test scores overall. Alternately, students who find studying to be a constant chore want to avoid it, which can cause their grades to slip over time. Middle and high school students spend a large part of their day in a classroom and will begin to have increasing amounts of homework that needs to be completed in the afternoon. If they can have fun doing some of this, they will also have more of a work-life balance and enjoy this part of their life. 3. Get specialized help Students who work with a tutor can also make studying social. Tutors can act as excellent role models who can motivate students to work harder and also pinpoint which topics are especially difficult. When students realize theyre able to improve the quality of their assignments by working on just two or three weak areas, they often become more excited about learning and gain self-confidence in the difficult subject matter. Students who work alone may not receive the same amount of motivation and specialized help that they can get from a one-on-one tutor. 4. Cover all bases Some students who work solo can remember anything and everything that was assigned to them, while other students perhaps are not so organized. When students work in a group, they have an opportunity to keep each other in check, so each student remembers every single deadline for each class. It is helpful to have several people looking out for each other while staying organized. One student might be especially talented in English and can keep everybody else on track but might need a lot of help in math and rely on somebody else in the group to help them remember important assignments and deadlines. How To Start Bilingual Tutoring For Children

How To Start Bilingual Tutoring For ChildrenBilingual tutoring for children can be extremely beneficial to your child's education. With the proper preparation and guidance, it is possible to help your child become fluent in two languages with little or no extra effort on your part. The first thing you need to do is understand how your child learns. If you have a child who speaks one language and they attend school in another language, they are learning their second language. There are a variety of reasons why this happens. The most common reason is that a child receives lessons in both languages at home.In order to give children a chance to learn the second language, they are often placed into different classes where they hear the teacher speaking the other language. While some of these children learn quickly, there are some who do not. If you suspect that your child does not hear or understand the teacher, you can enroll them in bilingual tutoring. This means that the children will g o to school in two different languages, but they will still receive the same education. You will need to pay attention to the schedule that you set. Children need to learn at their own pace and you will want to make sure that they receive the right curriculum and the right amount of instruction. If the school system teaches your child in both languages, they will benefit from receiving the same amount of instruction in each language. Many bilingual tutors focus on teaching the children their second language. This is important because the child can enjoy being in school in a place where they know a variety of different people. While the child may not be able to identify a lot of the words that are spoken, they will have the opportunity to interact with many different people and learn about different cultures. Many children enjoy the idea of interacting with other children. They are more likely to learn to communicate with other children when they are able to converse in a variety of dif ferent languages. Being able to converse with a variety of different people will increase their chances of success in school. If you have children who are bilingual, consider hiring a bilingual tutor to help them become proficient in their second language. It is very easy to learn the second language and many parents do not realize the benefits of doing so. There are many options to choose from and by looking around you can find a provider that is just right for your child.
